From the Elders:

We are thankful for your faithful commitment as a church family to God and to each other as we’ve reached out to one another in a variety of loving and creative ways over the past 11+ weeks. We also want to extend our deepest gratitude to you for your financial giving as we continue to pray and comfort each other during the challenges we are facing as a community, and while our entire country works to reduce suffering and the life-threatening effects of the COVID-19 virus.

We are thankful for the progress we’re seeing in Abilene as we cautiously monitor health conditions here. As we noted when we wrote to you on April 30, we’re looking forward to the promise of all of us being home together again at UCC for worship and Bible study.

As we shared with you last week in the UCC eBulletin, our Re-Opening Task Force has developed a 3-Phase Plan, carefully designed for our return to our church campus over several weeks, while helping to reduce health risks to everyone. NOTE: Each step along the way, the Elders will meet again to reconfirm or change these dates, based on health conditions in Abilene and Taylor County, before we move forward with the following steps:

  • Phase 1: Our 1st goal is to start worshiping and sharing communion as small groups and families in homes or in a few UCC classrooms by June 7. More details will be coming soon. Youth Ministry group members (6th – 12th grades) and the Bilingual Ministry will gather in the building with appropriate social distancing. NOTE: Worship and Bible classes will continue to be available by high quality UCC streaming for all others remaining at home.

  • Phase 2: Our 2nd goal is to resume worshiping and communion as an entire church family in the UCC auditorium and chapel by July 5. Again, worship and adult Bible class will be available via high quality UCC streaming.

  • Phase 3: Our 3rd goal is to fully resume worship and Bible Classes for everyone (including children’s classes) on September 7. High quality UCC worship and Bible class streaming will continue for all others at home.

NOTE: The time between Phase 1 and Phase 2 is two-fold – to provide sufficient time for us to ensure it’s safe to move forward with re-opening, and for the installation of new high quality audio and video equipment to upgrade our continued live-streaming of worship and Bible class well into the future.

Everyone is important to us – we are concerned about every member of the body. While we know that many of us are anxious to be back together as soon as possible, we are also cautious about protecting our entire church family as much as possible.

Once again, these phases are designed to provide options for everyone – those who are comfortable with returning to our UCC campus in the very near future for worship and Bible study as part of a “new normal,” and those who need additional time before returning. We fully respect each member’s choices and understand the importance of making choices to fit the best timing of each one’s comfort level and needs.

So, we encourage our most vulnerable members – those with compromised immune systems, high-risk or fragile health conditions, including those over the age of 65 – as well as all others with safety concerns, to continue at home for Bible study, worship and communion via our UCC streaming for the time being to avoid possible exposure to coronavirus. These precautions and guidelines are provided by the CDC, the Texas Governor’s Office, and the City of Abilene, as well as our own UCC members who are medical professionals.

NOTE: The government guidelines also continue to recommend that we use masks – although use of masks will be an individual choice – and keep assembled small groups to a maximum of 10 people unless space provides distancing of at least six feet. We will follow the standard of six-foot spacing in our seating arrangements in our classrooms and auditoriums, and as our members and visitors move about within our buildings.

We continue to pray our community’s health conditions will improve so all of us can be together again as a complete church family – this is our goal. Again, we will keep you regularly updated about our plans for the future.
